Who is Your Superhero?

Why does the protagonist in my upcoming book series—The Elephant Hunter—come off at times like a superhero? Because it often feels like an over-the-top, outrageous, courageous, effort to speak truth in organizations. Sometimes it can feel so big to say something so small and obvious. And it can feel so triumphant and exhilarating to have actually said it, that we need encouragement to take that risk and be the hero in our own stories.

In my transformation adventure, I continue to face false or limiting expectations for myself. Some of these were given to me, others I manufactured on my own, most of them have since been re-written. Confronting them meant admitting I’d been minimized by someone—including myself—and that I’d let fear out-maneuver my courage and choke out inspiration and adventure.

Being afraid of the unknown is natural. Letting it stop you from learning and growing is not. Mustering my courage after having relinquished it felt like a super-heroic act. It still does for many, especially to do so in organizations who pay your salary. But they won’t be there forever if we don’t help them evolve. They were formed to fill human need…only humans can save them.
