What's It All About...This Work We Do?

White question marks floating in the air.

It’s not about me, it’s about you. It’s not about us, it’s about them. It’s not about what I want, but what you need. It’s not about how we look, but about how they feel. How they feel isn’t about what they want but what they need. What they need isn’t about others’ wants but their needs. The business of business is NOT business. Business began as an organized way to meet peoples’ needs and make their lives better. Businesses don’t actually have the right to determine what a “better” life means for them.

My transformation journey was sparked when I discovered profit margins truly do come first in many organizations, before people, before purpose. Yes, some businesses exist purely for profit and serve no truly beneficial purpose. Duh. Did I just crawl out of an underground bunker? No. But I did just realize that these businesses are setting examples that normalize organizational behavior I cannot condone.

Every micro-decision shapes an organization’s culture and your own integrity. Choose wisely, as many will live with the entity we build through our choices to speak or not, act or refuse to act. There are fewer and fewer places to run and hide. We have to face ourselves and our beliefs. If not for you, for them. What truly is success? Staying afloat to do good work that helps people who need it…and feeling good about the way you do it.

There are so many ways to do whatever it is we do. Let’s choose the way that feels best for all, not just now, but over time. And a reminder, feeling “better” does not mean “comfortable.” 😉
